03/21/15 Spring Wildlife & Sunset

A pair of swans enjoying a swim at sunset on one of the first days of spring in Peoria, IL

On March 21st, I was able to venture out and enjoy the early spring weather in the local area. In doing so, I also found some time for some photography as well. While enjoying the tranquil early spring weather I ended up photographing some wildlife in the area. Last week, I missed out on photographing some spectacular sunsets locally so I was hoping I'd get lucky and also photograph a nice sunset on this evening in Peoria, IL too. I ventured out just about a hour before sunset to a local pond about 2-minutes from my apartment where wildlife usually can be found on a routine-basis. Over the years, I've photographed some swans in this area near Edwards, IL as well. Swans and some geese were out enjoying the mild weather on this evening as expected. I ended up using my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 II L IS lens that I purchased last month to shoot many photos of the wildlife and the early spring sunset featured in this post. It was a fun evening of photography as I was able to test out my new photography gear and finally shoot a sunset since it has been quite awhile since I had done so and long overdue. I've added several photos of the spring sunset and wildlife below:

Sunset, marking the end of this spring evening...

It was a very productive day of photography as I captured a great sunset along with some photogenic wildlife and I couldn't have hoped for anything better on a March evening. I'll be updating more frequently over the next couple of months as I venture out more and more enjoying the spring weather and at some point storm chasing since spring has officially begun.

03/01/15 Winter Snowstorm & Wildlife Part: II

A blue jay about to take flight during another winter snowfall in Edwards, IL

Earlier this month, I decided to shoot some more wildlife in the local-area during yet another snowfall. I recently just purchased a new Canon lens and was eager to test it out of course. Last week, I ended up upgrading my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS telephoto-zoom lens I've been shooting with for what seems like an eternity to the new Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.0-5.6 II L IS telephoto-zoom lens. After an entire day shooting wildlife during another winter snowstorm I was simply amazed at the quality of the glass on this lens. It was well worth the investment to say the least! I can't wait for spring and summer to shoot more with this lens. I've added several images I shot with my Canon 5D Mark III and new telephoto-zoom lens below:

A vibrant cardinal taking refuge from the falling snowflakes!
Falling snowflakes can create a stunning winter scene!
Snowflakes currently falling and a blue jay!
A tufted titmouse hanging out in the falling snow!
A shot like this doesn't happen too often...
Another blue jay about to take off in flight...
I was hoping I'd get some of these snowflakes in the background in some of my shots on this day...
Amazing detail!
Quite stunning!
A quick winter scene in the backyard...
A female northern cardinal grabbing some lunch!
"Hanging on to the last days of winter"

A tufted titmouse about to enjoy a meal...
A blue jay just after cracking open a peanut...
 More snow...
 Quite photogenic!
I love the falling snowflakes in this shot as it adds a nice winter's touch to the scene!
 A male cardinal...
 A female cardinal...
I was very impressed with this new Canon telephoto-zoom lens I shot these photos with...
I can't ask for anything better here...
 "Enjoying the view"
A blue jay amidst the snowy landscape!
 A well-timed shot!
 A blue jay close-up!
Another shot of the photogenic red-bellied woodpecker on this tree as some sunshine finally appears in the late-afternoon...

This was a fun day of photography testing out my new Canon camera lens. The falling snowflakes provided a true winter feel to many of the photos I shot as well. I'll be posting more as I venture out over the coming months as it appears spring is right around the corner...
